Episode 50: Part 1 - Seige Read-Along, Issue One

Time to celebrate people. Part one of episode 50 is out now. After you hear it you will hopefully understand why we had a skip week last week. We wanted to have the entire Read-Along to Marvel's Siege, but we didn't realize how much work it would be. We figure everyone who reads comics is used to waiting a little longer for something great but we wanted this to be episode 50 and didn't want to make everyone wait for all four issues to be done before we posted it. So we have decided to release it an issue at a time.

However, we already have an episode in the can with a special guest from this very board. So we are going to release that as episode 51 tomorrow. And then we will release 50 part 2 - part 4 as soon as we have them done. That way we can still release episodes without having to make anyone wait.

We would love to hear your thoughts on our Siege read-along part 1. We have all worked really hard on it and thought it turned out much better than we were had hoped.

Time Machine: Demon in a Bottle

"Demon in a Bottle" is a nine-issue Iron Man story arc concerning alcoholism. The story arc was written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton with art by John Romita, Jr., Bob Layton, and Carmine Infantino and published by Marvel Comics.

The storyline ran in The Invincible Iron Man #120-128 (March-Nov. 1979), plotted by David Michelinie and Bob Layton, with script by Michelinie. John Romita, Jr. [[penciler|pencilled] the breakdown sketches, with Layton providing finished art. Issue #122 (May 1979) was both plotted and scripted by Michelinie, penciled by Carmine Infantino and inked by Layton

"Demon in a Bottle" was originally only the title of the final issue in the storyline. When the storyline was collected in trade paperback in 1984 and 1989, it was published under the title The Power of Iron Man. "Demon in a Bottle" later became the popular name for the storyline, and collected editions were then published under that title.

Stark's alcoholism was revisited in later storylines, and remains a defining element of the character. Jon Favreau, director of the 2008 Iron Man film, said: "Stark has issues with booze. That's part of who he is." Favreau said that elements of the story would be used in future Iron Man sequels: "I don't think we'll ever do the Leaving Las Vegas version, but it will be dealt with.

Indy comic artist Powell, an Eisner-nominee, works full time with adults with developmental disabilities, which may have been an inspiration for Swallow Me Whole, a stand-alone graphic novel about two teenage stepsiblings with psychological problems. Ruth suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and thinks she can hear insects speak, making it difficult for her to walk across grassy lawns but landing her a sweet internship in the natural history museum. Perry sometimes sees a tiny wizard who speaks to him about his destiny, which would be cute if this were a fantasy comic; instead, it's sadly tragic since Perry recognizes the wizard as nothing more than a troublesome hallucination. It should be obvious from the start that things will not end well.

The BPRD was founded in late 1944 by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm to combat various occult threats uncovered in operations against Nazi Germany. It initially had strong links to the USAAF and was based at a military airbase in New Mexico, but later relocated to a custom built facility in Fairfield, Connecticut. It maintains strong links to various branches of the United States Armed Forces to this day. It is a private organization that receives funding from several major governments (mostly the United States and United Kingdom, although other countries like Canada, Japan, France, and Italy have been mentioned).

Ultimate X #1 (starts at 18:40)
Well, well, well… turns out a baby was dropped off on the doorstep of one James Hudson a few years back by an old Army buddy by the name of James Howlett who most folks knew as Logan, or maybe Wolverine. Never mind who the mother was – that kid is definitely his father’s son, right down to his fingernails… or claws.

And that, in a nutshell is how Ultimate X opens up. We’ve got a few familiar names and a teenager who is something of a rebel without a cause. After a drag racing accident leaves him in a position that most folks don’t walk away from, Jimmy Hudson discovers that he heals a lot quicker than most folks. When Kitty Pryde shows up at his doorstep with a box of Wolverine’s possessions and a holographic projector, he finds out the reasons why. He also gets a pep talk from his old man (both of ‘em, actually) and by the end of the issue, it looks like this rebel might just have found himself something worth fightin’ for.

Amazon Selling Select Marvel Omnibuses For UNDER 10 DOLLARS Its a pretty rad deal to get a book for 1/10th the original cost and I'd never dreamed of owning 5 or more but you for sure should check it out!

Jonas has finally borrowed the much sought after Alias: Omnibus from Sean. He's nervous about reading such a rare tome, but so far he's loving this ~~spy~~ series about a detective, one-time Avenger Jessica Jones as she takes on cases that take her to the dark underside of the Marvel universe. This series helped launched the Marvel MAX imprint in 2001 and lasted 28 issues and is a favorite of several of the Wednesday Warriors. Can't afford the out-of-print Omnibus? Fear not true believers as Marvel has re-released the series in two affordable trade paperbacks.

Captain America: Truth (starts at 13:45)

This mini-series posits that before giving the super soldier syrum to Steve Rogers, government scientists experimented on African-American soldiers and thus this story is about the "real" Captain America. Sadly, the idea of the military doing clandestine tests on it's own citizens actually not that far-fetched (read a history book!) Nevertheless, Sean loves the art in this book and found the series to be well worth a read. The series is collected in one volume and should be fairly easy to find.

You Have Killed Me (starts at 17:40)

Time for the weekly Crime Boner (tm) with this original graphic novel released by Oni Press. John liked this noir-ish detective story quite a bit, and though he liked the art he would have maybe preferred a tighter penciling style. This attractive hardcover volume should be available wherever comics are sold.

Sean H. likes this under-the-radar Marvel series, which reminds him of GI Joe. Secret Warriors follows the adventures of Nick Fury's secret group that assembled during the Secret Invasion. He says this is a fun series with a pseudo military/CIA vibe. The creators on this series are critical darlings, so how can you go wrong?

Secret Warriors is a continuing series and is widely available.

B. loves this conspiracy tweaked sci-fi series from Strangers in Paradise creator Terry Moore. In this issue the business hits the fan as the mysterious wanderer wreaks some severe havoc upon a roadside tavern and the story kicks into high gear as it approaches its final year. Studio guest and Warrior Associate Scotty chimes in to let us know that he likes this series too.

Episode 33: The Dark Side of Comics

After a quick discussion on what is or isn't a graphic novel and what format it actually fits in we get right into our picks and discuss the dirty closet of pornography in comics. Henny takes a beating for the team and goes into our shop and buys a copy of COMIC AG #108 for the team to review. We also discuss Image United and the utter flop its turned into so far. Emotional Rape happens on so many levels we have a hard time determining whats worse.

Punisher Max #2 (starts at 8:15)
The second in the series is got some seriously f'd up stuff going on right now and Jonas is loving it and can't wait to see what happens in the series. The second issue of Punisher Max focuses on bodyguard Wilson Fisk as he recants the story of his life as a career criminal and sets the stage for his new career as the Kingpin of Crime. Henny declares this "everyone's pick that only I picked" so its easy enough to assume we all made bad decisions here for not choosing the Darwyn Cooke drawn book. Issue #50 -- an oversized extravaganza drawn by Darwyn Cooke -- draws upon previous storylines and yet tells a story that begins and ends in this one issue. And what an ending it is.

Tallulah Black, otherwise known as the most important recurring character from this volume of "Jonah Hex," features prominently here. As a partner to Hex. A lover. And something more.

The Eisner Award-winning team of Matt Fraction and artist Salvador Larroca begin a new chapter in their critically acclaimed epic run asthe darkest chapter of Tony Stark's life—or is that afterlife—begins!
Bryton goes off here and chooses a few books so it was a bit hard for me to recount it all here your simply going to have to download to hear him ranting here about four or five different titles but the majority of it centered around Iron Man and his most recent story arc. There are quite a few spoilers to the series here so if your planning on picking it up you may want to skip ahead to the middle of the rant!
He also covers the continuity of Capitan America, some of Thor, Donald Blake and quite a few of the Noir Titles that he feels aren't getting as much attention as they should. He discusses Spiderman Noir, Wolverine, Daredevil and the X-men noir titles.

More Noir! Stumptown follows Dex, a PI that has a severe money management problem mostly due to gambling it away in a Native American casino. With a mentally challenged little brother at home under her care, Dex is far from a role model. Placing him in front of video games to keep him occupied while she goes out and gets herself shot up isn't exactly a guardian-like thing to do. Regardless, it provides a great starting point for us readers and fast tracks Stumptown's world building process. Portland home of cheap heroin!

This indie comic is a look into life in San Francisco as seen through a beer guzzling, bike riding, sarcastic artist. Filled with humor and heart ache it's a perfect match for those who don't like men in tights, flying around, and picking fights.

There has been much critical acclaim over this series and Sean takes the time to sit down and give it a read. Surprised that this series withstands the sands of time and is just as interesting and relevant today as it was when it was written, Sean give it his stamp of approval. Writer-artist Walt Simonson throws all preconceived notions out the window and over a two-and-a-half-year span produced epic adventure that held an ever-growing readership in thrall.

Oh snap! Another Geoff John's book? Really, I couldn't have anticipated that!? So Henny likes this book but hates this book? I'm still unclear about a lot of our picks as of late but Superboy Prime is actually reading a copy of Adventure Comics #4 as are you so your reading a book about Superboy Prime reading the book your holding. It sounds like an out of body experience to me. But he does seem to have a pretty well organized collection of comic books and quite a lot of action figures so I have to cut him some slack. Tha'ts weird superheroes collecting superhero comics? Yea... I dunno.

Finally something not from DC. Jeff Smith creator of Bone
has been kinda put out of commission with a hand injury that has forced him to really slow his output on books and that's why RASL comes out so infrequently but believe it or not its on a schedule and its just a really messed up schedule. Rasl's an inter-dimesional art thief traveling to and fro in the cosmos with seemingly little issues who has to travel to parallel worlds to save the people he loves.

Usagi Yojimbo: Yokai(starts at 22:09)
With the 25th anniversary of the black and white versions of Stan Sakai's antropomorphic samurai ninja the celebration kicks off with the series first ever original painted graphic novel. Miyamoto Musashi, is a wandering swordsman on a warrior's pilgrimage, selling his services from time to time as a bodyguard ("yojimbo") to make his way. Over the course of Sakai's long-running series, Usagi's stories have found inspiration - occasionally direct inspiration - in the films of Akira Kurosawa and the manga "Lone Wolf and Cub." Anyone even remotely interested in Japanese feudal culture should check it out.

We talk about the whole 25th century concept and math far beyond my comprehension. I hate math. So we talk about that and the history of Booster Gold and Co-Ed showers. Need I really say more? Your not going to want to miss our perfect evaluation of the future. Henny sums it up perfectly at 5:26.

Ultimate Spider Man #3 (starts at 12:48)
After praising X-Men Forever for its masterfully mangled storytelling I've finally dropped it from my hold FOREVER. The most difficult pick of the week for me to have chosen so far and after nearly 6 minutes of talking about the books I read I hated. My default pick of the week was this one. Its hard not to like. But Sean hates Peter Parker's JNCO jeans and Gwen Stacey's eyebrow ring. I think since David LaFuente is spanish born and resides in London he may not have a really solid grasp of what's cool and hip and with it. We also rant forever about the Punisher Max new reincarnation and how it may or may not be living up to our expectations. I also dropped the X-babies. Sad.

Episode 27: General Comic Discussion

Since Henny was out of commission for a few weeks and so many great titles are coming out, we felt we had to try to catch up and talk about some of our faves that haven't made it into the podcast lately (and quite a few that have, we discuss in more detail).

Jonas gets goosebumps as he and Henny talk about the current situation of The Walking Dead and the dark psychological turn that it's been taking and how its become not as visually graphic but more disturbing.

Sean is loving the Dark Horse one-shots such as Abe Sapien that seem to be the answer to the DC and Marvel ongoing Dark Reigns and Blackest Nights.

We discuss the Dark Reign series and how it seems to be wearing thin on nearly all of us. Is it possible to have a backlash from a series? If I see Dark Reign on a title anymore' I'm not as prone to buy it now. I may actually shy away and so do the rest of the Warriors at this point, with Dark Reign lasting over a year now and no clear end in sight. We discuss, The Seige, The Seige: Embedded and the Fall of the Hulks which will start the Red Hulk ongoing series.

I've been reading the Scott Pilgrim series and have to second Bryton and Sean's nomination of Scott Pilgrim as an awesome must read. Its up to the 5th trade and has provided me with plenty of laugh out loud moments which I feel are way to few and far between in comics these days (at least the ones I've been buying. Spawn never makes fart jokes anymore, sigh....) and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this one and am looking forward to the new movie coming out soon.

We talk about noobs and BRB and how my sweet sister-in-law is painfully unaware of nerd acronyms. Happy Anniversary Brother! Who will never actually listen to the podcast since we don't discuss Rob Liefeld (other than every episode).

Henny and Jonas discuss the series as it's progressed so far and how after nearly dropping the title, Henny is loving the newest "SHEBANG" issue that con-artists from Brazil swindled him into buying it.

Joshua Dyson the writer of the series is also writing the Vertigo Unknown Soldier series that Sean has been really enjoying. I can't bring myself to read it because it's so issue heavy and serious.

Jonas has finished the second trade of Air and is even more in love with this twisted ongoing series of the Blythe family. With a run of only 5,000 issues we demand that you pick up the series now!

Punisher #1 Starts @ 13:50
Jonas sums this up so: "The Punisher sees himself on the list and kills himself" There we spoiled the whole thing for you. Actually nothing like that even happens so I swear it's awesome. Probably the best fight scene in a comic ending with the title character getting his ass handed to him, I've ever seen.

I still am stunned this is the first book put out by award-winning author Neil Gaiman and the artist Dave McKean. Set only in the memory of its author, (who looks like Neil) this brillant short story meanders through levels of recollection surrounding a childhood injury. After dislocating his arm, a young boy is taken to see a doctor - an aged osteopath who was once the doctor of legendary gangster Al Capone. Gorgeously illustrated in mixed media by Dave McKean, Violent Cases is a sensuous and thought-provoking meditation on our memories.

Just when John Constantine was starting to be a bit rumpled, along comes another nattily dressed smart-ass who does business with the unholy darkness; this time, he's a little closer to being one of them. Templesmith's Wormwood is a preternaturally cheery corpse with an ever-present cigarette and pentagram tattoo on his forehead to match the psychotic grin. In this debut, the gentleman corpse comes across a plot by a cabal of demons to infiltrate the world of humans and generally lay waste to it all in the nastiest way possible.

Olympus #1 Starts @ 2:30
What do you get when you take 'Boondock Saints,' smash them together with 'Ghostbusters,' and pepper the fusion with a modern look at Greek myth? You get 'Olympus,' an ambitious book by Image that is certainly demanding of its audience, but is well worth the effort.

The story is fairly straightforward, but has a charm all its own: Castor and Pollux are the immortal enforcers of Olympus, as they hunt down rogue demigods who might upset the natural balance of 21st century Earth.

Hellblazer #251 Starts @ 10:25
Sean's favorite story run in comics of all time! Issue #251 is an interesting, amusing, and slightly disgusting look at one of the quieter periods of Constantine's life. He isn't battling demons for his very soul this time. He's merely trying to fan the flames of romance with a girl who should, by all rights, know better than to hang around a bloke like him. And just when things are looking up for the would-be Romeo, he develops a nasty skin infection of dubious mystical origin.

Yup, just another day in the life of John Constantine. This story is broken up by a handful of flashbacks starring a factory worker who betrayed his worker's union. Also, he seems to have his own case of black magic skin rash.

WARLOCK IS BACK! Everyone's favorite alien robot is back on Earth, but why? Also, see the effects that UTOPIA had on Illyana and the rest of her crew and witness the most vicious fight ever to grace the pages of NEW MUTANTS. The combatants? Cannonball and Dani Moonstar. I'm really stoked about the new art by Zachary Baldus and colorist James Campell's work is pretty unique and makes me decide to continue to pick up this title. New Mutants was on the chopping block for me for sure. Omnilingual Translation is still a crap power Henny.

Wolverine: Old Man Logan Giant-Size (2009) - #1 Starts @ 26:15

How can they make Wolverine any cooler? According to Jonas make him 100' tall hence the Giant-Size Wolverine annual

Millar made readers wait eight solid issues for Wolverine to unsheathe his claws, and then a further wait followed for this, the climactic chapter, in which he actually uses them. With Logan's family dead -- killed for fun by the Hulk clan -- there's no longer anything left for Logan to lose, and his story will end the same way it started: by fighting the Incredible Hulk.

Whoo, this one's a doozy folks. We just came off a late night bender from previewing ZombieLand! (starts @ 40:58) Wow. It's well worth the price of admission. In fact, since we saw it for free, now we will have to go see it seven more times. It opens up in theaters Oct 2nd. Sean Leslie's already seen it thrice. Sheesh.

As the dead attack in full force, Green Lantern is faced with an impossible decision and the scattered remains of the Justice League suffer a terrible loss. Who can stop the Black Lanterns? Why are they rising? And how can the Spectre help? Will any of us even ever know? Henny picks this one purely based on the cover alone. This guy.... Don't worry Sean lets him have it later in the show.

Hmmm... surprise surprise, Jonas picks another issue of Walking Dead. Seriously people, it's just that good. It's not that the other books out right now aren't good, this one is just that much better, so, you know, if you're not reading this, PICK IT UP! Part 4 of the "Fear the Hunters" storyline. Of all the twists in The Walking Dead so far, I'm surprised we didn't see the idea of cannibalistic human hunters coming a mile away. It fits perfectly with Robert Kirkman's twisted view of humanity post-zombie outbreak.

Adventureland Comics #2 Starts @ 11:30
Is it possible that our dear Henny has gotten sick of zombies, stabbings, blood, guts, and gore? Does he really just want to cuddle up with a cute little romantic comedy? Yep. What?! My dude is sensitive, he likes some teen romance. His favorite movie of the year was '17 again.' Henny's on the money with this one, as they tell the tale of the revived Conner Kent, as Superboy settles back into life in Smallville. But all is not well in Superman’s hometown. And while Conner reunites with Wonder Girl to discuss their future, Lex Luthor, and Brainiac form a partnership that will put the entire DCU at risk.

Ok, back into the blood and guts of it, that's what I'm talkin' about! A real man's pick! I picked this issue almost exclusively because of this blog. They are by their own admission, a bunch of surly irish professionals who happen to work in comics and post to the blog daily. I have to admit my favorite consistently on the blog has been Declans's work, so when I heard tell he was starting up this book with 'Boom' I had to check it out and to my surprise (well not really) the books quite well written as well! So be sure to check it out as well as the mick's page it's well worth the gander once a day, my sweet Irish heritage demands it. (Isn't it strange that I make fun of Blackest Night, yet I have never read any of it? Just a thought)

He’s watched people die and seen himself become an internet celebrity. But all that means nothing—compared to tonight.

Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them.... and home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all...
Big ups to our boy spidey for recommending it to Jonas. According to Jonas it's the best comic book adaptation of "Throw Momma from the Train". While it may not be as good as "the night was moist" it's still pretty spot on.

Sweet Tooth #1 Starts @ 16:52
From out of the deep woods and the mind of acclaimed indie cartoonist Jeff Lemire (THE NOBODY, The Essex County Trilogy) comes a new Vertigo monthly ongoing series like no other! After being raised in total isolation, Gus - a boy born with deer-like antlers - is left to survive in an American landscape devastated a decade earlier by an inexplicable pandemic. Even more remarkable is that Gus is part of a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid children who have emerged in its wake, all apparently immune to the infection.

Did it remind anyone else of "The Village"? Henny ruins the plot of the movie in order to prevent anyone from watching it in the future. He hates it. So if you haven't seen it may wanna skip past this, we also touch on accents in comic books. I think they are awesome. He also talks about Solomon Grundy... Again....

Parker: The Hunter TPB Starts @ 25:00
The Hunter, the first book in the Parker series, is the story of a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loved and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only one thought burning in his mind - to coldly exact his revenge and reclaim what was taken from him! Richard (Donald Westlake) Stark's groundbreaking Parker books are adapted for the first time as a series of graphic novels by Darwyn Cooke. The initial graphic novel brings to life the first Parker book, The Hunter, which introduces readers to the dangerous anti-hero's cold and calculated world of criminals, thugs, and grifters.

This is hands down my pick for the YEAR.
The same (kind of) story is told in the Mel Gibson movie "Payback" while it stays closer to the source material and is the first time Stark authorized the use of the name "Parker" for anything licensed. I effing loved this book, you absolutely have to pick this one up, honestly my favorite comic I've read so far this year. I love Darwyn Cooke's masterfully rendered pages. There are nearly 20 pages of wordless comic in here that are quite possibly some of the best visual storytelling I've seen. This is truly an achievement of the craft and cannot recommend this book any higher.

Jonas is just a cowboy deep down at heart and can't get enough of this new series. But the only thing I found redeeming about this issue was the fact that Dynamite is soliciting the newest robocop series on the back! Meh. But anyways Jonas loves/hates the fact most of the story was written in spanish. What's your opinions about using different languages in english language comics, anyone really upset or love this? Just wondering.

Blythe, an acrophobic flight attendant for the fictional Clearfleet Airlines, is invited to join the "Etesian Front", who claim to be an anti-terrorist organization. The Etesians trick Blythe into transporting plans for a terrorist attack. When she discovers this, she and a man named Zayn are kidnapped and taken on board the plane that is the hijack target. Later, Zayn and Blythe leap clear of the plane as it crashes into the sea. The head of the Etesian Front, a man named Benjamin Lancaster, also survives. Zayn is later accosted by Lancaster in Narimar, a place that ostensibly disappeared from maps during the 1947 Partition of India, and interrogated as to the whereabouts of an Aztec artifact. Blythe follows him to Narimar, where she is designated by the Etesian Front a "hyperpract", that is, someone with the power to move into different dimensions or realities. The three escape Narimar, while their plane is followed by a mysterious winged serpent.

Time Machine: Batman The Killing Joke

Join us on a journey through time to the year 1988, be sure to bring along $3.50 to pay for your copy of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's Batman: The Killing Joke. Promise it's well worth it.

Arguably the greatest joker story ever told. The Joker, after recently escaping from Arkham Asylum, kidnaps Commissioner Gordon and argues with Batman that anyone can go mad after "one bad day".

"The Killing Joke" also goes through the Joker's origin story and tells one of the only stories from 1988 that's still held up in DC continuity. The story stands as a chilling profile of madness. The Killing Joke provoked fury among many readers who lamented the disposal of Barbara Gordon as a mere pawn to testosterone, yet Gordon reinvents herself later as super-info-hacker Oracle, poster girl for disability empowerment (see Birds of Prey, LJ 7/08).

We take a look at both versions of the book; the original 1988 version featuring John Higgin's coloring, as well as the 2008 re-issue of Brian Bolland's re-coloring. Bolland was very unhappy with the original version's colors and was never satisfied with the final product, despite much critical acclaim and fan praise.

Warrior News: Disney buys Marvel!

Disney buys Marvel! Disney held a conference call with investors that just finished to discuss the deal and while much of it was focused on the financial aspect of the deal – with regards to both current and future opportunities – there were a number of comments concerning publishing and Marvel’s film slate that are of interest.

With a $4 billion dollar price tag I think they got every penny's worth.

"A good way to judge this would be looking at DC and Warner Bros. As far as I can remember, Warner Bros. has never interfered too much with DC and really does let them manage their own business. But then Warner Bros. wants to be the only one making their movies and that is why we haven't seen tons of DC movies because Warner Bros. has no time limit to make films so they really drag their feet.

But at the same time the possibility of Marvel popping up in Disneyland makes me really excited. Plus if Pixar did do something with Marvel then awesome."

Both Jonas and Henny pick up on how evil infests itself in the idyllic farm country of Superman's hometown of Smallville. Just as Conner Kent/Superboy has started building his new life there as part of the Kent family, a horror unlike any he's faced before attacks in the form of Kal-L: The dead Superman of Earth 2! Also after committing the most atrocious crime of all: vandalism of the Smallville welcome sign. Destruction of public property isn't a joke people.

Ex Machina #44 Starts @ 06:40
The pieces of the puzzle are all starting to come together for Mayor Hundred and the whole Ex Machina Series. Vaughn has stated that this series is only going to be 50 issues and as it winds down the series is really starting to get more and more amazing. Issue #44 wraps up Vaughn's penultimate story arc, with Hundred descending to New York's sewers in hopes of confronting what he assumes is a revived Pherson. The truth is far more complicated and unexpected. Pick it up if only to check out JD Mettler's amazing coloring work.

Unwritten #4 Starts @ 13:35
While we amongst the warriors disagree about the quality of Peter Gross's art in the series, we all pretty much agree the story is very cool. The plot, for those who haven’t seen it about, stars Tommy Taylor. Tommy is a real guy in his 20's, but when he was a child, his father based a series of fantasy novels very much reminiscent of Harry Potter on him – the Tommy Taylor books. The books quickly eclipsed Potter, Twilight, and a great many other fandoms to become a 13 book juggernaut… but after book 13, writer Wilson Taylor mysteriously disappeared. Chaos ensues. Stabbings, Kidnappings, Sickles in the back. it's getting good, seriously...

Don't be driven mad by the fact that there are lizards that can't actually talk like every other animal in it, Henny. An amazing series very worth checking out we won't even ask that you buy all 20 trades like Sean did in a week.

Ultimate Spider-Man #001 Starts @ 17:10
Hmm... so Sean picked this just one episode ago for his pick and I didn't even realize it. I blame the fact I'm currently suffering from the swine flu or something, and have had a momentary lapse of sanity (well some moments last longer than others) but I loved the book even more do I dare say than Sean did. This is the Spider-Man title you should be following folks. Amazing Spider-Man comes out weekly, way too rich for my blood and is continually switching artists on the title this one has that damn Lafuente who's just got a clean and awesome style that I'm loving. Even though Spidey's head is a big round-ish I'll still be buying this title for a few seasons to come

Ultimate Spider-Man #001 Starts @ 30:55
Jonas thinks Lafuente draws Spider-Man's head like a basketball and while we agree, it's not enough to throw us off this new reincarnation of the Ultimate Universe. If the goal of “Ultimatum” was to re-energize the Ultimate Universe, then in those stakes it was a great success. Between Bendis’ plot and Lafuente’s art, “Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man” feels fresh and contemporary. Sean loves the concept of "messing" the entire Marvel Universe up and “Ultimate Comics Avengers” #1 kicks things off strongly by setting up the new status-quo quickly: after being in a different universe for a while, Nick Fury is no longer in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Ultimates program has taken a big hit, Tony Stark is still a drunken debaucher, Hawkeye and Captain America are pretty much all they’ve got left, and Captain America has gone rogue.

X-Men Forever #5 Starts @ 37:33
Holy balls! The biggest train wreck of all time is back! Why they didn't just call this Ultimate X-Men is so far beyond me. I don't think I'll ever understand. This new X-Men title picks up right where ancient X-scribe Chris Claremont left off in 1996, in an out-of-continuity story that has John laughing his ass off as well as gasping between pages. Its hard to pack this much awesome into 22 pages (Awesome also doubles for 'retarded' quite often in here) But listen in at around the 40 minute mark to the very first on-air argument between me and Henny that earned us our very first explicit tagging (ie F-bomb)!

Is Matt Fraction writing the next Iron Man movie script in comic form? The all new story arc feels that way. The always maniacal Norman Osbourn is after the list of all the 'Super Hero secret identities list' from 'Civil War' and Tony Stark is the only man able to play keep away long enough for he and Pepper Potts to get captured by Madame Masque. He even gave Pepper a female iron man suit! Good crap what's it gonna take for these two to catch a break? An Eisner winner for best new series is well worth a wallet raping.

Red Robin #1
Flashbacks, Nightwing, Damian, Bruce Wayne, one more addition to the family won't hurt. Sean equates this first issue to the beginning of 'Apocalypse Now,' busting up hotel rooms and throwing bottles through mirrors. Even though the series is up to issue #3 now, we're catching up with the all new incarnation of the Bruce Wayne butchered family tree, to check in and see just how awesome and like-able Tim Drake is as he toughs it up all over eastern Europe.

Punisher Max Vol. #1: In the Beginning
This Punisher is THE Punisher. This is much how John has always imagined him, just a hulking brute of scars and swear words, with showers of bullet casings spraying everywhere. This is the Punisher that has been there all along, but not until the Max line came out could they tell. A brutal and remorseless Frank Castle deals with ghosts from the past and makes a ton of new ones in the first trade paperback of the series. Micro's back and he wants Frank to get in line. I think we can guess the rest from there, but watching the train wreck is impossible to take your eyes off of.

He also has a new series from Vertigo coming out that is advertised in nearly all of vertigo's titles coming out this week with an 8 page preview called Sweet Tooth. The story about a young man journeying through the devastation in a post apocalyptic world with antlers?

Uncanny X Men #512
Henny has been pretty critical of Matt Fraction's work on the X-Men up to this date, but has finally deemed an X-Men book worthy of puttin' on your hold list once again! I for one couldn't be happier about it. Follow Beast and a band of misfit scientists on a scientific exploration journey back to the year 1906 into the bustling San Francisco Bay area to gather a blood sample from each of the parents of the very first mutant! Make Mine Marvel! I picked up the title as well and have to say it was pretty worthwhile.

Scott Pilgrim
Scott Pilgrim is a 23-year-old slacker who lives with his gay room mate (a non-sexual sugar daddy) and is dating 17 year old girlfriend named Knives. He's trying to clean up his act to land a girl named Ramona. A delivery girl for amazon.ca who cruises around on rollerblades. She's dated a series of evil guys in the past though and in order to date her he has to defeat her 7 evil boyfriends! Its a very gaming-centric comic.

The Scott Pilgrim series has been optioned by Universal. They plan to make a movie version called Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. It will be live-action (not animated). Edgar Wright will direct. He and Michael Bacall are writing it, based on the entire series. Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead will star. The first day of principle photography is March 30th, 2009. (imdb)

Powers
In Powers, Superpowers are pretty common and it follows the story of two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, police officers who are devoted to cases that involve people with super powers. In the first trade paper back, the two detectives are set out to solve a mystery of who killed the towns most beloved of all superheroes. Its a pretty awesome cross between a crime and a superhero novel taking the best (and worst) from both genre's and mixing them up into one amazingly executed series.

Cursed Pirate Girl #2
Although it may not technically be out this week or even available at most shops, (#2 was on sale at Comic-Con) John cannot recommend this book strongly enough. Jeremy Bastian's technical style is masterful. He doesn't remember ever seeing anything as amazingly detailed and incredibly well thought out visual storytelling in any other medium. Follow Cursed Pirate Girl as she travels to the bottom of the ocean with a parrot to gain entry to the Omerta Seas where her father an unknown pirate capitan is defiling the seas.

Sean Leslie retells one of the best encounters with Mr. Steranko that could have ever possibly be had at Comic-Con! Anyone know why he hates Marvel so bad? Art Adams continues to reign as John's favorite creator of all time! After being too afraid to get a few books signed for the entire Con, John finally approached him near the end of the Con and asked him about his very first work, his introduction to comics, and some of his earliest childhood memories related to comics.

Sean shows Jeph Loeb, the scribe of 'Teen Wolf', and his daughter Audrey Loeb his toes tattooed toes with the words Teen Wolf. I think they were both wowed Mr. Loeb who is clearly impressed despite whatever Sean says. He asked: "Really? That's a tattoo?". Pretty defining moment in my opinion.

There are three stories featured here that aren't vital to the Blackest Night tale, but these Tales of the Corps features the origin stories for the Saint Walker of the blue lantern, The Indigo tribe, and Mongul. Well worth checking out and delving even deeper into the Lantern Universe.

B.P.R.D.: 1947 #1
Henny had a whole ton of stuff to choose from Green Lantern #44, Invincible #64, Irredeemable #4 and he narrows it down to BPRD 1947 #1. Henny loves the Hellboy spinoff and the atmosphere that they have done an amazing job creating. It;s also a more regular title than Hellboy.

Dark Wolverine #76
Despite what everyone else is saying and despite how I know were supposed to hate Daken, I like it. I think Daken is a bastard (not because he really is) but he's a bastard I'm starting to like. I'm just saying give it a go, it won each of the warriors over even though we had all dropped or attempted to drop it from our holds.

Chew #1
"Chew" #1 will be reprinted (in black-and-white) in this week's "The Walking Dead" #63 at no extra cost and it may be the only way your gonna get your hands on this title as its become pretty hard to find. Chew is a detective who's sense of taste may lead him to some pretty foul tasting stuff. He can sense whatever he's eating's feelings and it tastes him to some pretty interesting results.

Wednesday Warriors were featured on the local news station KJZZ channel 14 here in Salt Lake with interviews conducted by us and filmed by our boy Trevor. The segment was edited down to 1 1/2 minutes from its original 5, but we're still glad it made the air! We'll be posting the full segment here in the next little bit.

Wolverine #75 Dark Reign
Although most of us had written the new Dark Wolverine (Daken - Wolverine's son) off as a retarded Insane Clown Posse ringleader. Sean accidentally forgot to drop it from his hold and he shocked us all by choosing this as his pick of the week. Sean feels Daken may actually prove to be a character to watch, even though it's under protest by the rest of us, He still stands by his pick and has challenged you and each of the warriors to check it out.

Northlanders #18.
Brian Wood's version of vikings is really relatable and completely entertaining. While it talks about viking life its not necessarily the focus of the series and has been an ultimately a really entertaining read. With a constantly changing artist on the series we like the feel it lends to the series. The warriors try to determine whether Northlanders or Viking is the poor man's viking novel.

Destroyer #4
Another Kirkman BLOODBATH for your dollars to be thrown at! Cory Walker and Kirkman reunite to make this awesome title on the MAX marvel label and feature as much blood and guts as possible! Destroyer is a hero who's about to die and has decided to tie up all the loose ends left over and by tying up loose ends we mean he rips arms off his old enemies and beats them to death with their own limbs!

100 Bullets
100 issues, 1 briefcase, 1 gun and 100 untraceable rounds of ammo and the proof that your husband,wife,brother,sister,friend,family member was murdered by the hands of a bad guy make for one of the best crime saga's the comic industry has ever seen. I love me a good revenge story and this one is jam packed with tons of them small story arcs beautifully combine into the overall story that leaves you stunned at how well this whole thing was tied together.

A horror anthology of 48 pages of awesome art and stories that make the Crypt-keeper shiver. Although the creative team has been jumping around a bit on this title Sean is really liking the new author Kathryn Immonen in the series and thinks this book has found a new stride. A lot of people may have dropped the series over the years and it may just be time to revisit or pick it up for the first time.

Deadpool #1
I felt it was written by retarded chimps, but I'm a Deadpool Noob so what do I know but I'm still pissed I paid for this with my hard earned ever more devalued american dollars. Apparently Im not alone and the people at CBR said it better than me.

"Because no one demanded it, another Deadpool ongoing title featuring an artist known primarily for his work on “Star Wars” comics and a novelist who’s never written comics before that will almost certainly be cancelled within a year! "

While I'm still reading VIKING I can't help but feel its moving a little slow for my tastes but the cool magazine size and amazing artwork and gorgeous colors will ensure I repeatedly throw money at this title until the peso is finally more valuable.
